Review, EGO Z6 https://madisonwilawncare.com/2024/04/12/review-ego-z6/ Fri, 12 Apr 2024 07:26:44 +0000 https://madisonwilawncare.com/?p=3986

Review, EGO Z6 Zero Turn Mower

Review of the Ego Z6 zero-turn mower by Green Mowers. We have used both 52-inch and 42-inch Z6 Ego Z6 zero-turn mowers for two sessions commercially for this review to tell the pros and cons of this Ego Z6 zero-turn.

Batter Life,

The Ego Z6  zero-turn mower battery life depends on how you use it, the terrain, and the conditions. On one charge we found the 52-inch Ego Z6 zero-turn mower can handle 6 average sized midwest homes. For open fields from weekly maintenance, we found it can handle up to three acres of healthy turf and two acres for very high-growth areas usually seen in May. The stock 42-inch Ego Z6 zero-turn mower with its four 10AH batteries is about 50% less capable than the 52-inch. Keep in mind we use this mower professionally for a pro look and a pro finishing time, we usually focus on battery life last but can conserve more power through our efficiency. That said we had our drive speed at three or four (max) and our blade speed at three, four, or turbo (max).  In situations where the grass is thick and long the best way we found to utilize the batteries is to turn the blade speed up to max and go as fast as you can without lowering the blade tip speed/rpm.

You may need more batteries for,

  • A stock 52-inch Ego Z6 zero-turn mower with 6x 12-AH batteries if you have more than 1.3 acres of tight areas or 3 acres of open areas of healthy turf.
  • A stock 42-inch Ego Z6 zero-turn mower with 4x 10-AH batteries if you have more than 0.65 acres of tight areas or 1.5 acres of open areas of healthy turf.

Pros,

1, Cut Quality,

The Ego Z6 zero-turn mower blades and cut quality are the best parts of this electric mower. Almost all of the electric riding mowers on the market today including the commercial brand Mean Green Mowers have their unique design to reduce airflow, they do this to conserve battery life. The problem with low airflow is that it can result in strangling blades of grass for a potential second pass or a lower cutting speed and causes problems when bagging. The Ego Z6 zero-turn mower did it right by using a very normal blade design for a mulching blade and a high lift blade for high airflow which has been proven in the field for decades. The 52-inch with the three-bladed fabricated deck does cut better than the 42-inch dose. We are very pleased with the cut quality.

2, Durability,

We found the Ego Z6 zero-turn mower to be very durable and reliable. This is because we used the Ego Z6 zero-turn mower commercially where a commercial mower is ideal. We used this mower hard with max settings going through the largest bumps, hitting a bolder with the deck at full speed, hitting large rocks the size of grapefruit with the blades, and even hitting rebar once with the blades. We would not be surprised if we abuse our Ego Z6 zero-turn mowers more than anyone else. We are very pleased with the durability.

3, Eco-friendly,

The 52-inch Ego Z6 zero-turn mower has 25 hp, according to an EPA study, a gas 25 hp mower puts out the same amount of emissions as 5,041 miles of car pollution each hour the blades are running.

More,

  • Good Support.
  • An air-ride seat.
  • 8 mph max speed.
  • Twice as quiet as gas.
  • Less maintenance cost.
  • Costs $1 or less to fully charge it.
  • Best stock light Set-Up for a zero turn.
  • Drive controls are smoother than other electric ride-ons we used.

Cons,

1, Tire Grip,

It lacks grip due to being lightweight. Being lightweight can be a good thing as it creates less soil compaction and is more forgiving to not rip out any grass from a less experienced zero-turn operator. For more grip, we recommend filling the tires with calcium chloride for the 52-inch Ego Z6 and switching to the 52-inch Ego Z6 tires for the 42-inch Ego Z6.

2, Upfront Cost,

The 52-inch Ego Z6 zero-turn is about $2,000 more expensive than a similar framed 25hp zero-turn.  However, It has much less maintenance cost and the battery life can outlast the frame of the mower to use again. This mower pays for itself if you’re using it for a mowing business from the gas savings.

3, Shoot Cover,

The shoot cover goes with the design of the deck, this prevents you from taking it off without grass going everywhere, we cut half of our shoot cover off for more spread and to get into tighter spots.

More,
  • No foot-activated deck raising.
  • The blades start up slower than a gas mower.
  • You can not mow or leave it in the rain, light rain is OK.
  • Deck height only goes up to 4 1/4 inches, we feel 4 1/2 inches is ideal.

Review Of The Mean Green sk-48 stalker  https://madisonwilawncare.com/2021/11/22/review-mean-green-sk-48-stalker/ Mon, 22 Nov 2021 03:11:12 +0000 https://madisonwilawncare.com/?p=1960

Review Of Mean Green Mowers, Pros & Cons

Review of the Mean Green Mowers SK-48 Stalker by Green Mowers. We used this mower for three sessions for this review to tell the pros and cons of this Mean Green 48 in.

Pros,

1, Batter Life,

The Mean Green Mower battery life depends on how you use it, the terrain, and the conditions. On one charge with two 7kw batteries and the blade and drive speed set to high while using the blower attachment when needed, we found the Mean Green Mower can confidently handle 20 average-sized midwest homes of healthy Wisconsin cool-season turf with weekly and bi-weekly services. For open fields from weekly maintenance of healthy cool-season turf and with the blade and drive speed set to high, we found it can handle 6.5 to 8.5 acres or a runtime of between 5 to 6+ hours. They advertise with up to 10 acres and a 7-hour runtime however using this mower with the blade speed set on low for most or even half of the day is not practical in the real world commercially. Also using the blower attachment often does have a noticeable difference in runtime.

2, Grip & Hills,

The grip is very good due to the center of gravity, the extra torque, and no free-rolling. The Mean Green Mowers stand-ons have a better center of gravity than any other gas stand-on. There is no free-rolling effect going down a hill. For example, if you let go of the controls going down a hill it will stop where it stands. It is much more stable on hills than hydraulics especially going down a hill.

3, Durability,

We found the Mean Green mower to be very durable. This mower continued to run after hitting large rocks the size of grapefruit with the blades, hitting rebar once with the blades, and with an employee throwing it into a bolder pit. We are pleased with the durability.

4, Eco-friendly,

This Mean Green Mower has 24 hp, according to an EPA study, a gas 25 hp mower puts out the same amount of emissions as 4,839 miles of car pollution each hour the blades are running.

5, Tip Speed,

The Mean Green Mowers blade’s RPMs hold up very well. You can accelerate full power into thick grass and the RPMs hold up. They will never lose more than 5% RPM in normal conditions of 5.5 inches or under of cool season grass.

More,

  • Fewer gas stations.
  • Twice as quiet as gas.
  • An automatic parking brake.
  • Costs about $3 or less to fully charge it.
  • Batteries are rated at 4500 hours with individual cells to fix if needed.
  • You can carry bagged seed, mulch, and soil on top of the battery compartment.
  • You can transport them on an open trailer through the rain with the main power switch turned off.

Cons,

1, Blades,
The blades start up slower than a gas mower.  All Mean Greens come with a low lift blade for better battery life. There will be more stranglers than usual for over 5 inches of grass or wet grass. You need to make sure the deck is as low as possible without making clumps of clippings to get a good cut. There is something nice that comes out of this as the grass gets mulched up better and it only shoots the grass out less than 100 ft. Which makes it much easier to not put the grass clippings where you don’t want them to be.

2, Drive Controls,

Mean Green Mower’s newer models have much better and improved drives. However, there will still be a heavy learning curve coming from hydraulics, it does take some time to get used to. The Mean Green SK-48 stalker drives are less forgiving and touchy going in a straight line. Accelerating from a stop is difficult keeping it straight until it reaches the speed you want. You need to correct and adjust way sooner than hydraulics. After you get used to it straight lines are not a problem it just takes more focus and skill however bumps can through your line off more easily.  I can still one-hand it just fine and it’s still more precise than hydraulics on low drive speed.

3, Upfront Cost,

The Mean Green SK-48 stalker is about 8,000 more expensive than a 25hp Scag V-Ride however from the gas savings, this mower pays the difference up itself. Overall life cost will average about the same however Mean Green Mowers have less maintenance and the battery life should last 4500 hours which will outlast the frame to use again.

4, Drive controller replacement,

If the drive controller brakes down it can be as high as 2k to fix. This is the only part that you can not put in yourself as it needs to be programmed by the dealer. Every other part is easy to troubleshoot and replace for a reasonable amount. For example, each blade motor is $300 and takes 15min to replace.

More,
    • You can not mow in mid to heavy rain.
    • Can’t wash it completely without removing the batteries.
    • The tires wear out way faster because of the non-rolling effect, the extra grip, and the extra torque.
